A review of the genre-stretching work that will endure for ages to come.
The long-awaited additions to the Harry Potter collection.
SYNOPSIS
Harry Potter was a sheet music editor who was popular in the 1930’s. Though much of his work has been lost, there has been an effort in recent years to digitize his classic offerings, making them available to a new generation of musicians and vocalists around the world.
Harold Potter’s works span from arrangements of Johannes Brahms, to such classics as “The Man on the Flying Trapeze.” His impact on the early mass-media music industry was impressive, given his simple ways and interests.
REVIEW
I have a copy of Harry Potter’s 1943 sheet music for “Aloha Oe,” written by Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii. This has been one of my favorite songs since I was a child. I played this over and over, and I still remember the notes to this day.
I was surprised to find that Harry Potter published many other pieces, and that they are available today as Kindle electronic editions from Amazon. Here is a sample of the the collection I’ve found:
- Hungarian Dance No.5 (Piano Solo), Johannes Brams and Harry Potter (1933)
- “Fairy Wedding” Waltz by J.W. Turner Op. 120 (revised and edited by Harry Potter, 1933)
- The Man on the Flying Trapeze (1933)
- The Storm (An Imitation of Nature): Piano Solo (H. Weber and Harry Potter, 1933)
- Aloha Oe (Farewell To Thee with Guitar Chords by Liliuokalani and Harry Potter, 1943)
- Rustic Dance – Piano Solo (C.R. Howell and Harry Potter, 1933)
- Edwards Dance Folio: Square Dances with Calls, Polkas, Jigs and Reels (Harry Potter and Eddie Dorr, 1946)
- Gypsy Dance – Piano Solo (H. Lichner and Harry Potter, 1933)
- Love Dreams (Liebestraume) Vocal Key of F (Franz Liszt and Harry Potter, 1932)
- Red River Valley Song With Guitar Chords (Harry Potter, 1933)
- Oh Dem Golden Slippers: Edition Supreme (Chorus for Male or Mixed Voices) (James A. Bland and Harry Potter, 1928)
- Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Spiritual Song with Guitar Chords (Harry Potter, 1934)
- Carry Me Back to Old Virginny Song with Guitar Chords (James Bland and Harry Potter, 1934)
- When the Word’s All Done This Fall Cowboy Song with Guitar Chords (Harry Potter, 1935)
- Swanee River (Old Folks at Home) (Stephen Foster and Harry Potter, 1935)
- Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz Unexcelled Edition (Johan Strauss and Harry Potter, 1933)
- Hand me Down My Walking Cane (Harry Potter, 1935)
- She’ll Be Comin’ Roung the Mountain (Harry Potter, 1933)
And there are so many more, too. Harry Potter was so prolific that there doesn’t seem to be any end to the music that he edited and sold throughout the world. These are amazing arrangements, in a style that is sure to give you a sense of nostalgia for the simpler times between the Great Wars.
CONCLUSION
My kids have been Harry Potter fans for many years, or so they tell me. But my fascination goes back way before they were born.
For any Harry Potter fan, the collection of Kindle-based sheet music on Amazon is a treasure beyond belief.
I give each of these publications 5 out of 5 stars!
Until next time,
